Hi my name is Dave, my wife is Tracey.  We are renting our home out from early next year and travelling around the UK, we will start in Scotland and spend around 2 years here intially.    We are looking for any advice from caravanners who have engaged
on any trip of a similar
duration.

Due to this our current vehicle insurers will not cover us. We have an alternative address we can use for correspondence, but will be on the road the whole time. Has anyone completed a trip of this length before, and if so how did you overcome the
vehicle and van insurance issue. Any other hints/tips/advice anyone can offer on living/touring in a caravan for this length of time would be most appreciated. There will be myself, my wife and our 2 dogs.  PLEASE NOTE. This is not a redirection of mail query
but the fact of not getting Insurance due to being on the road. Many thanks

I'm not sure I understand the insurance problem if you are staying in the U.K.  Long travel overseas insurance can be solved but UK is straightforward.

Certainly for the first year in the U.K. just take out annual car, caravan and breakdown insurances using your present home address before you set off and away you go. I don't know of any insurance company which places a limit on UK travels. For year two if you last so long just pay the renewals when they are forwarded on to you, but you may have had enough by then.

    Take care.

I think the problem is that the premium is heavily based on where the car is normally kept when not in use. If you have no usual base then they cannot calculate this element easily.

It probably needs a good broker who can discuss your case with the insurers and sort something out for you.

We did over 2 years continual touring, mostly abroad, with a caravan.

The car insurance was through the AA but was horrendously expensive for the first year but did cover the car full time in Europe.

I believe that as we are still in the EU your insurance company have to cover you in the EU but at reduced cover. They used to wiggle out of this by retricting the time abroad and withdrawing cover if you wanted to extend it.I use Saga who cover my car abroad
for 12 months, any duration of trip, and they don't need to be informed. I do have a permanent UK address though, and without this it is problematical and expensive.
