Which way to face the pitch marker?

Having just returned from a short break I wondered, is there a rule about the direction that you pitch your van? 

We have always reversed up to it - we'd never seen it done differently.  This past week however some vans had driven in towards the marker and others had reversed.  The knock on effect for us arriving late in the day to a full site was an incredibly narrow
pitch with no facility to put up the awning.  The van next to us had awning/porch on both sides and was straight in. 

Glad it was a relatively short stay.
