Unexpected uncoupling

Hi i have recently returned to caravanning after  break of 20 years or so. i have had two trips which have gone well. However whilst manoevring slowly on a tight right hand turn outside my house the car and caravan parted company!! Fortunately the road was
very quiet and no damage to the caravan resulted apart from the breakaway cable (obviously). I was more than a bit taken aback as i am sure that the coupling procedure had been carried out correctly. Thinking about it had been necessary to mount the grass
verge on the nearside to completethe turn and when i checked the tow ball mechanism i found that the lateral movement of the towing hitch was quite limited and I wonder if by mounting the verge I had created a situation where the tow ball had in effect been
"levered off" by the difference in height of the car and caravan. If anyone else has experienced anything like this i woul be interested as at the moment my confidence levels have taken a bit of a dive.
