Overnight stop suggestions? Midlands to Scotland

We are looking at travelling upto Scotland and staying at Bunree next Easter. Looking at finding an over night stop, possibly roughing it enroute. Has anyone done this on there way upto the Highlands, if so are there any layby's etc which you could recommend?
All feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
