Advice please on Satellite TV in Europe

We took our caravan across the North Sea for the first time this year through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and France. We could usually find and view local TV using the conventional aerial but rather missed an English language service.

We've just ordered a new caravan with a fitted satellite dish but have no idea what else is required to get programmes. At home we have cable (Virgin) but have an old SKY STB from a previous contract.
