Winnats Pass
We're booked in to Castleton CC site this weekend. Our normal approach is through Buxton onto A6, then right onto A623 and left onto B6049 towards Hope. I'd really like to go down Winnats pass because it seems much shorter and the B6049 is a pretty horrible
road anyway! I'm never brave enough to do it when I get there! Has anybody done it in a medium sized motorhome (ours is 7.45m) and survived!

Please only use these recommended directions for the final approach and not SatNav, due to unsuitable roads for towing. Winnatts Pass is unsuitable for caravans and motorhomes. From East (Chesterfield): turn onto the A619 (signposted Bakewell). In about
9 miles at the roundabout in Baslow turn right at the second exit onto the A623. In about 7 miles turn right onto B6049 (signposted Bradwell, Castleton). At the T-Junction turn left onto the A6187. The site is on the right in 2 miles. From the West: leave
A6 (Chapel-en-le-Frith - Buxton) onto the A623 continue past first signpost for Castleton, at Sparrowpit (as it leads to Winnatts Pass), In about 6 miles turn left onto the B6049 (signposted Bradwell, Castleton); then as above from East.Kind Regards

Hi Kimberley, thanks for that. As you will see from my post that is our normal route. I was hoping somebody may have done Winnats pass in a motorhome as I've heard that it is really not that bad.

It could be done, both up and down, but the real issues are the narrowness of the road, the fact that there is no where to go if things go wrong, and the unpredictability of other drivers. And of course all the sheep hell bent on making sure that they die
in a spectacular way! There are probably restrictions, certainly warnings, so best to go the way the Club advises. We did The Long Mynd in our MH last year, other drivers struggling were a pain in the proverbial, and it was rather hairy getting back down!

It looks pretty narrow although vehicle do pass each other.

I would love to know if you ever brave it, everytime we go and pass that part of the road we have a mini debate and silence the rest of the journey....OH always wants to go because of the shortness and I get so stressed at the suggestion in case, in case
etc etc...we always drive past then don't talk the whole of the extra miles around we end up driving....we bought a new sat nav this year with all our sizes, dimensuons in and OH said if it says go that way we are definately going to try it.....3 months and

Pumfo, you are an adventurous spirit, just like us! It is 1:4 in places, narrow gates and once you are enroute, there ain't no place to go but down! 7.5 tonne limit. Just pray their aren't any budding Chris Froome's out, favourite with cyclist! Brake check
and clutch check highly recommended! We are only 5.5 metres by the way!0 -
Just read 'the 200 bus from Chapel-en-le-frith goes to Castleton via the Winnats pass'. If a bus can do it I'm sure I can!
Be aware that the bus is a little one, not your conventional double decker
we go to Castleton frequently, and would not attempt the steep and narrow route with anything but the car - more because of who/what you might meet - sheep, bikes, walkers etc

Never been to Castleton so don't know the Pass. According to my Truck sat nav it is doable, it is not usually wrong. If I can do

Ha ha just seen your report. I'm an absolute wimp! how can a mile stretch of tarmac in the peak district compare to that. I'm going for it!!

I'll do most things solo if the route is within the parameters of my vehicle and there are passing place but not towing a car.

Perhaps different in a small motorhome, but my issue with using Winnats with a caravan is that the road through Castleton itself is fairly narrow with a couple of 90 degree bends. Saw someone taking a van through last time we were there...wasn't pleasant.

It is indeed narrow! but with a bit of patience, a lot of care and a degree of good luck it can be done. If it is busy it would be quicker and safer to go around though. You won't be popular that's for sure!

Sorry boys, bottled it! Had every intention of giving it a go but changed my mind at the last minute (mainly because we'd been driving through sleety snow most of the journey) and did the 'old man's route'.
Did walk down it this afternoon though and was passed by a couple of tuggers and all sorts ov vans.
Maybe on the way home??
