Baltic Wharf - tips
We have just spent at week at this excellently located (with rather dated facilities) site and had no need to use our car at all. In addition to the bus route mentioned in the Handbook (which is a limited service into town) there is a bus stop five minutes
walk away where one can catch a bus to e.g. Weston-Super-Mare, Clevedon or the NT Tyntesfield. The wardens are experts on local bus routes and I encourage members to ask them for advice.
Whilst at Baltic Wharf we took the opportunity to revisit the SS Great Britain which is a few minutes walk away along the floating harbour as it is known. Much has been done to make the ship more interesting
to visitors but please beware of the free audio guides......my wife and I called separately at the onboard kiosk to collect the handset and were both met with a less than helpful employee who failed properly to explain that the handset recognises one's location
on the ship and provides relevant information. Problem was - both our handsets were faulty and failed to recognise where we were at all. Only we did not know this. We wandered around keying in random numbers in the hope that we might hit upon the right one
but mostly in vain I regret. A great pity because our visit would have been much more enjoyable had we known what to expect from the guide! Please ensure your audio guide works when you collect it.
Finally, Bristol is well provided with free wi-fi hotspots. Even the pub adjacent to the site has free wi-fi as do several of the buses! Makes one wonder why the Club continues to charg its members for wi-fi access. Time to move into the 21st century
