Severe attack of snaking

On my way to the Black Horse farm CC site last Thursday, I overtook a lorry on the M4 and started "Snaking" quite badly. I think I was in the wrong gear (fifth) when I did it and almost overturned. Anyone got any advice on how to overtake safely or are there
any videos online that I can look at?
