mattress toppers -advice needed

Hi, swapping our fixed bed over at weekend for one with bunk beds as layout will be better suited to us as a family with 2 boys. We will now be making our double bed up at front of van. The last time we did this in an older van I remember being very uncomfortable
as buttons etc in the upturned cushions. Whats the best thing to get for a good nights sleep. Thinking of getting some memory foam cut to size which we can just roll up and store away when not in use,  or does anyone recommend a mattress topper? Thanks
