Sat Nav Map Update

I have a Garmin LMT2598 with Full European Map Coverage. I am about to update maps for first time, on connecting to Garmin Express warning shows stating device is 82% full and SD Card maybe required. Does anyone know from experience if device will in fact
update existing maps without a card.
