Severn Toll Crossing

We are about to take a trip which will involve using the Severn bridge. We have a Fiat Ducato conversion motorhome (IH)but are not clear which cost category this comes under. Has anyone any knowledge of this toll and is there any concession for being a member
of the Caravan Club (such as there is for the M6 toll)?

    From the gov website:

    'Campervans and motorhomes with a cooker, sink and sleeping accommodation permanently installed are classed as Category 1 vehicles. Drivers mustattend
    a manned Toll Booth. If the Toll Collector is unsure of the vehicle classification or unable to see the permanently-installed living accommodation, they will summon a Team Leader to inspect the vehicle and determine its classification    .'

    So £6.60 westbound only 

    We object to paying tolls in the UK given the levels of motoring taxes and avoid where possible. A much more scenic route westbound can be used. Try changing settings in your route planning tool and see where it takes you, you might find some lovely places
    to stop off Sealed You're on holiday after all.

    Then come to Scotland.  Still part of the UK and no bridge tolls.

    I think that would cost more in fuel but there again there is a principle at stake.

    So you obviously prefer to queue throgh Birmingham on the M6 rather than using the toll road Frown

    As I live in North Yorkshire the only time I am anywhere near Birmingham is on the M42 heading south west. But even if I was I wouldn't pay to go on a toll motorway in the UK M6 or any other. VED is quite enough without paying tolls in my view.

    If you travel from the south  to Wales the bridge is better than a huge detour, which would probably cost a lot more than the toll fee! Wink

    Agreed, Brue. 

    Caravanners might like to note that caravans cross free as only the towing vehicle is charged for.

    Also, if you have a Blue Badge presentation of it at a manned booth will get you a free crossing.

    All very helpful, definitely will use the bridge on this occasion rather than lengthy detour but now we know the category and of the need to go through 'manned' toll. There is so little info on the Severn Crossing website. Thanks all.

    I've sneakily planned my Welsh trip to enter in the north and exit at the south.

    The OP is Warwickshire based by his username location. Where is the detour if going the route given by others earlier M5/M50/A40/A449 ,that assumes rejoining the M4 in Wales? We also don't know his destination.

    For us to avoid the bridges west bound to visit family in the Rhonnda is shorter in distance than going over the bridges if we go up through Cirencester, Gloucester, MonmouthTongue Out
