Black streaks

After chatting with a cc site neighbour last weekend about black streaks on the side of our new caravan (named Peggy), he recommended buying lengths of narrow fabric which slide into the awnig rail. Apparently this stops the black streaks forming!  Has anyone
used this and does it work?  Any information would be apreciated!
