Communications whilst travelling

I am travelling to Croatia by Car and Caravan with friends who will be in a Camper van, we would like to keep in touch whilst driving and possibly out of sight on one another and wondered whether anyone else can share their experience.  We have been looking
at Walkie Talkie Radios but they are either too expensive or have rubbish reviews ( we do not wish to use phones)
