Hiring a tow car or buying?

I'd be grateful to members for any advice as to which is the best option - buying a towcar or hiring.  We only caravan about 4 times a year and are in the process of replacing our current tow car.  It crossed our mind it might be more cost effective to buy a small run around and hire a towcar when we go away in the caravan.  Any thoughts and views very welcome.
