Paying a deposit for booking

We have just made a booking the CC (AS) site at Riverside, Betws y Coed.  They took £20 deposit when we booked.  Wonder if they have many cancellations?  The deposit is non refundable.  Is this a good idea to stop all these cancellations?  We know this has
been discussed on here before.
