Travelling on spec

Having read most of the discussions regarding not many available sites has anyone just travelled around the UK and tried to book as they go without planning. Is this brave or a total no no!! We have thought about it but would hate to think that we would
have to return home. At present we do pre book but just wondered if anyone has tried.
