The poor state of our roads
Just got back from a 5 day stay down at the CC's Castleton site had a wonderful time, but the roads between Sheffield and Ladybower reservoir were just about the worst I've seen for a long time, with potholes and the surface breaking up, it was like a giant
slalom trying to avoid them, the worst affected were the A6101 Rivelin Valley Rd and the A57 Sheffield to Manchester Rd. I thought our roads around Calderdale were bad but they are not a patch ( no pun intended) on those roads. So if you're heading that way
take it steady and get ready to be all shook up as Elvis said.

Its the same round here I noticed when i went into the Village this morning (docs again
) that some one had been round marking "some" of
the potholes for repair ,it was so obviose that others also needed doing but maybe they only repair now if deeper than a certain measurement

The roads here are terrible too and they seem to be getting worse. I cycle quite a lot so see close up how bad they are and it really is shcoking. When you think of the amount of money the government take off us in road tax then you would hope the roads
would be in a reasonable state but no.0 -
There was a front page spread in our local paper a few weeks ago outlining the money that it has cost the council in compensation for drivers whose car has been damaged by potholes. The money was quite a substantial amount so by not reparing them the local council actually ended up having to give money to drivers

True crockery rattling territory around here! Repairs consist mainly of a man with a bucket of hot Tarmac and a spade to pat it down with! Even when they are repaired the standard is shocking, lowest bidder for contract. Won't say more, too political!

It seems most of us are affected in our local areas. We've become more aware of it recently. As already said, trying to avoid the holes is virtually impossible.

The patching around here in Essex doesn't look like it will last too long and unbelievably there are some where the patch doesn't fully cover the pot hole. I don't know if the people responsible for the roads ever check the sub contractors standard of work
but they certainly should.
The other problem I notice is the poor quality of the road markings. They are non existant in some areas.0 -
I watched a council meeting recently during which a councillor described how he witnessed a van from the council pull up at a pot hole, a couple of 'workers' climb out and shovel a bit of tarmacaddam into the hole, then drive back and forth over it it in
the van.We are very badly served by our council......and increasing the layers of bureaucracy by having elected mayors will not fill the pot holes......

My eyes are glued to the road ahead trying to spot the worst of the sunken grids and pot holes and trying to get my wheels either side of them. I'm surprised I haven't been breathalysed for weaving down the road. Having said that, I don't often see a Police

We used to have system of bags in N.Warwickshire (fortunately we've changed over to a bin system now). On
a windy day we used to have to play 'dodge the milk carton and yoghurt pot' when we took the car out!!David

There is a pothole outside where I work that is 3m long. When the cars go through it you can hear a loud bang. When I reported it once before they came and inspected it and got it filled as it was too dangerous to leave. It is now just as bad as before
if not worse, as they only bodged it when they repaired it last time. Phoned up the other day to report it, and all they could say was it will be filled at some point. I pointed out it was on a dangarous section of road and that cars were swerving around
it, but they were not interested. If a caravan wheel went through it I dread to think what would happen. Drive carefully everyone and keep a good look out.0 -
Perhaps the people that the councils get to repair the pot holes are the same people that come knocking at your door asking if you want your drive tarmacking as they have some material left over from another job !!

I think it was probably in jest and linked to the fact that the majority of pothole repairs are bodged jobs. Or at least they are around here.

If the current lack of road maintainance is to continue for another few years we will all have to drive around in our SUV's. No more low slung sports cars or sports coupes, even normal family cars will be susceptible to damage.
Don't know what the short terms solution entails, so my suggestion is to reduce speed on suspect roads.

It's no better in a Jeep I can assure you! Our council compounds the problem with a fixation with speed humps and cushions! I live three miles from my Mum, who I care for daily. In that journey I will negotiate 21 humps or cushions! Times that by another
three journeys a day and it is a wonder I have any car left! Be easier to go cross country over fields!0 -
It is true about the state of our roads however I wonder if the caravan manufacturers are clasping their hands in glee and giving thanks for a perfect get out clause for their poorly spec'ed caravans.

to our visiting foreigners.A dirty & untidy Britain !!....one of the contributors, here, is lack of bins in stopping areas (h/s?, terror risk as in airport bins?....) or the total lack of emptying rotas......rubbish strewn around the bin, even tied up in bags next to (on top of) a stuffed bin....
yes, the correct thing to do is to take it home if you can dump it properly, but it doesnt help if bins are never emptied...
