TV in Europe - we have found a solution!

Being fed up of spending ages trying to locate a tv satellite, inspite of having a good meter. After reading many reviews we have purchased SLINGBOX £99, plus annoyingly buying the app at £10.99, we tested from various locations in the UK before leaving home as having brought from Amason we could have returned it!

we were apprehensive that it would not work as promised , but IT DOES do as promised!

The  SLINGBOX connects to your home tv recorder and then by use of the app you can control the box from any where with an Internet connection, be it sites or bars, you can watch live TVs as at home, watch previously recorded programmes or set your recorder to watch later!

Takes a bit of getting used to the delay to send instructions to your home box but it DOES work!

I bought an Apple Digital AV adapter to connect my iPhone to the TV (£30 or so from Amazon, but you can buy 'copies' for about half that ) and I plan to use free apps (Digital TV and 'Film on TV') to connect the phone to the TV to watch UK television.

Not tried them abroad yet, but at least the second one is reckoned to work abroad.

I'll use my Three 'Feel at Home' allowance if there is no wifi.

Yes we have an Apple HDMI adapted, brought a cheap one and it melted and nearly caught fire! The advantage we found with the SLINGBOX is that you can record and watch later as opposed to watching live, we tried  film on last year but found it buffered a
    lot!

    Happy Holiday!

SGC, I've heard of the 'slingbox' before, could you confirm something please. When you say link to your recorder back home do you mean a Sky box or will it link to Freeview box, we don't have Sky.

We do have satellite in the van but when in Spain we tend to use Filmon, we don't watch it live unless we have a very good signal, what we do is record the programme to the Filmon server, then download it to the laptop late at night when most folk have gone
off line. By doing this you can watch the programme at any time you choose and it doesn't buffer.

How will the slingbox cope with weak wifi signal? Or doesn't it rely on it. Would be interested to hear how you get on abroad with it.

TG, Slingbox can connect to a recored provided that recorder can be wifi enabled....ie, it has to be seen by the slingbox.

its no different that Sky Go (etc) that can remotely record programs....ive had an app on my phone for years which allows me to do this....

however, viewing relies on a reasonable wifi system end-to-end.

so, if youve got good wifi on site, why not use Filmon or similar?

ok, you cant access historic recordings from your recorder at home, but is this really an issue...just another piece of kit to buy, set up and swear at when it doesnt work in Spain....

Thanks BB, think we will stick with Filmon, we also record lots of programmes on a hard drive prior to going to Spain, worked for us the last twice so as you say why add more equipment.Wink

Has anyone used the 'Film on TV' app that I mentioned above?

    Or the 'Digital TV' app?
