North and West Wales

Staying south of the Wirral from 17th to 21st July and whilst there spending a day at the British Golf Open. We're looking for some suggestions on places to stay for the couple of weeks before as we intend to set off from home early in the month if the weather
is OK. We are based in the West Midlands so it's either up the A5 or up the M6 and down the M56 and A55 as I'm not sure about the quality and width of the roads into mid-Wales? Anybody recommend some good locations and sites?
