smart car tow

Hi there

Bev and I have been members and caravanning for some 9 years now and enjoyed many holidays in or trusty old van

We are now looking to replace the van but are considering a motor home instead, we can only see 1 real disadvantage, driving about when set up. We like to relax on holiday and not put everything in its place after use etc.

We think to be able to use the motor home as a car will need a lot of discipline in keeping things tidy and out the way ready to set off.

We have noticed over a number of years that sites that are within walking distance of a town or village tend to be booked up over a weekend or bank holiday. We assume that is so motor home owners have the convenience of being able to walk to a town where
we caravan users have the luxury of our car.

I know it is possible to drive the motor home into towns etc but were on earth do you park them, street parking is hit and miss even in a car and they are too high for a multy story also most council or private car parks I know of have a hight barrier to
keep the travellers off.

Staying on site is fine for a weekend or few days apart from walking the dog can stay there happily but when staying for a week or two you do need to get out and about and will want to visit some of the local attractions.

The only other option is a towed smart car, a trailer would be impractical for us as we store our van and will do same if we have a motor home and would have no were to keep a trailer.

That leaves an A frame, there are some now available with a separate breaking system mounted in the tow car that utilises the cars power breaks and can be reversed without the breaks locking on and claim to meet all legal requirements but this still seems
a gray area.

Also being an Automatic will the gearbox be at risk, as an engineer I well understand about the oil pump on many auto boxes, but do see a lot of Smart cars on A frames.

Anyone that tows with an A frame must have encountered these things and problems and I would be very interested to hear you experience and comments, particularly those that have had a run in with the boys in blue here or aboard.

Many thanks

Roy and Bev
