Oxygen use

Are there any members who use oxygen (ambulatory or permanent) and able to carry on caravanning? How do you cope regarding cooking and heating?

Hello and welcome. Yes I believe there are as I've seen posts rekating to this, but not all on one thread. Hopefully someone will be able to help you, were a friendly bunch. Try to keep this checked out and post another comment on it after 24 hours or so
if no proper replies. Helps to keep it in sight.

I have certainly met two motorhomers who were on oxygen but can't give you the information you need - I hope someone will come along.  I imagine you are worried about gas and oxygen - I use a double electric induction hotplate at home that is portable - always supposing you would use sites with ehu?  I take a single one camping sometimes too - it doesn't draw anything like 2000 watts on the lower settings.

You  could  get  quite  a  bit  of  information  about  folks  who  do  this  if  this  Blithering  Forum  had  a  halfway  decent  "Search  Engine"  Sadly  I  just  tried  looking  it  up  but  only  got  a  moan  about  Old  Hartley  Wardens  !!  But  certainly  there  are  several who  have  commented  on  using  Oxygen  &  the  possibility  of  getting  "Delivery"  on  site  un  less  I've  got  my  memory  in  a  twist  &  tangle  again  !!

    Good  Hunting  !!

Basically for cooking I would suggest a double electric ring and turn off gas supply altogether and maybe pull fuse on cooker ignition? . What sort of heating does your caravan have?

I think you can find a cheaper version of this but -

    https://www.andrewjamesworldwide.com/kitchen-c1/kitchen-electricals-c7/ovens-hobs-c56/double-induction-hob-p377

I use mine at home a lot and it was half that price.

My Dad was using oxygen in his final years and he used a company that supplied oxygen through the NHS (at no charge to him). I'm sorry I don't know their name, but I would imagine that you see an 'oxygen nurse' at intervals and they would know.

He had a machine at home that supplied oxygen and also portable bottles for shopping and other outings. If he went on holiday, he rang them in advance and they would provide suitable equipment in the hotel room or apartment that he was staying in.

They seemed to be extremely efficient and I'm sure would be able to supply suitable equipment to suit your needs.

I will try to find their name.

If you go to the web site 'NHS Choices' and then look for 'Home Oxygen Services' there is some good advice and information there (sorry, can't do a link on iPad).

That site lists the NHS oxygen providers for each region. Also tells you how to reclaim electricity costs for running a concentrator.

It also says that you shouldn't use oxygen equipment within 6 feet of an open flame.......might be possible in a caravan?

I would dicuss your requirements with the relevant provider.

    Thanks Ian.

It is t he use and storage of a cylinder should I need to use it inside that I am dubious about

My mother was on piped oxygen at home for a very long time, and originally  had 'tanks', but was then provided with an oxygen concentrator.  We managed to take her away in the caravan with us more than once during her time using it.  She  had tanks initially, whilst at home and but then was provided with an oxygen concentrator which is a great help for mobility and safety too.  This made it very much easier than carrying around even the smaller supposedly portable tanks and is much safer because there is no possibility that the oxygen could be 'released' into the atmosphere and be a potential fire risk.

This is something you should explore with your supplier.  Whilst she was using it the concentrator came free, but this may not be the case any more.

One of the links mentions a concentrator as being about the size of a large handbag I think. Somebody mentioned loaning one and somebody had bought their own. From memory not much change from £2,,000 to £3,500. From my reading there are a variety from good and bad manufacturers.

My mother's home concentrator was the size of a portable gas fire (perhaps 2 ft x 18 in x 15 in), and her portable one fitted into a duffel bag sized bag.

I beleive they can also be run off the cigarrette lighter in a car.

Edit: Yes the home ones are considerably larger.

FiL has a concentrator that runs off a battery or mains. It's like a drag along brief case on its own wheels and extending / collapsing handle, but much smaller. No concerns in the caravan, it was his wish to visit our caravan whilst we were at Baltic Wharf
recently. He has the bank of cylinders in the house and had bottles delivered for a cruise last year.

This was the link I was struggling with last night - here

The supplier that my Dad used (Baywater Healthcare, I assume) seemed to be really helpful and provided whatever he needed - a concentrator at home, portable bottles and temporary installation at his holiday destination.......all for free.

I bought one of these but can't get it to work. It works at home but not my motorhome, as though it IS drawing too much power.

Worried it's broken and can't get any help from the Andrew James website.

That's what happens when they let the Lego men loose. Search still doesn't work but four year old posts float to the top.😂
