HMRC Scam

Just received an e-mail supposedly from HMRC telling me I had a rebate.  Binned it without opening.  How do I know its a scam, well I've never given my e-mail address to the HMRC and also I had a letter from HMRC yesterday.  Incidently this
mail also had an attachment so never open the attachment.
