Is yours too long? A word of warning!

I have to say since i've been towing a van which is only around 4 years i've always been rather anal about getting things right, e.g. towing weights, nose weights, tyres etc etc and thought myself to be "on the ball"....all T's crossed and I's dotted so to speak. I even remember when I changed the van I checked with my motor insurer that the new van wasn't too long that it would affect my car insurance, as I remembered reading on some forum or other that sometimes this could be the case. The girl then said it was fine and I myself read the policy and could not find any reference to a restriction on trailer/van length (Direct Line). So I've been happily towing around since then with complete peace of mind. We're going to France in August, our first time abroad towing and i've been getting everything ready, Red Pennant, legal requirements etc and thought I would just doubly check with the car insurance (have a bit of OCD) as the renewal came through about the same time, just to make sure all was OK. The nice young lady said yes all was ok, but for some reason, I pushed her to deffo make sure this was the case and she put me on hold whilst she doubly checked herself. When she came back on the phone and read out some "underwriting notes" to me, I nearly fell off my chair with her response......."any vehicle under 3.5t GVW must not tow a trailer/caravan in access of 7 metres"....mine is 7.24m....effectively I have been uninsured for the last 3 years whilst towing!! She apologised and that was that, after all what could I do?........I have since taken out my car insurance with the good old reliable Caravan Club. I Tell you, CHECK YOURS NOW! Roger.
