Detachable tow bars, any good?

I will shortly be ordering a new towbar for our new car.  It's a Nissan X-Trail.  We don't want a swan neck bar as they seem unsuitable for towing with Al-Ko hitches.  So that leaves flanged bars, which I prefer anyway having used one for many years.  Now,
my question, is a detachable flanged bar better, worse or the same as a non-detachable one?  Other than cosmetic differences I can't see a benefit to paying up to £100 extra for a detachable bar.  How do they detach?  Is it just a matter of unclipping them
somehow (by hand) or are tools required?  I welcome your opinions.
