Good Evening, I have just purchased a 61 plate Nissan X-Trail to tow my Swift Alpine caravan and I was trying to find out if anyone else who tows with an X-Trail tows with the four wheel drive on or just in the normal mode. I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you.

Unless you are towing through mud or snow I can see no reason why you would need to engage 4WD, probably do more harm than good if they are the same as the Terrano's used to be.

I have a 2005 X-Trail. 3 settings. Front Wheel Only, Auto, and Lock

I have used the Auto four wheel drive setting towing when road conditions have been bad. Twisty up and down on poor surfaces, driving on snow and ice, standing water. The lock should only be used on soft ground as using it on the highway can cause damage.
I have used the lock driving through 9'' deep loose sand and when towing onto a very muddy, waterlogged pitch area when only 4x4 vehicles were allowed to site all others by tractor. The Auto 4 wheel drive can be very useful in adverse conditions.

We have had two X trails the first a 57 plate, which we replaced with one of the last of this model in 2014. I always leave mine in auto, as it only uses it if required. Certainly if tyre wear is anything to go by, as it is similar to 2 wheel drives I have
owned. When I had the 57 plate I did search through the manual and it recommended using auto when towing. The lock should only be used as ET says, although the manual says it disengages at 5 Mph. Although to date I have never had to use it.

We tow with our 09 x trail in auto position as advised by the 4x4 dealership we bought the car from. As newbies we just went along with their advice.

I own a 57 plate X trail and use the auto setting when towing. It came in handy on the last site that had a gravel surface on a steep incline. Also it can help with grip when pulling out at a busy junction.Smile
