Towing on the A1

Good evening everyone.  I am looking for some advice please.  Back in the 70's and 80's we lived in both Yorkshire and then Durham and frequently used the A1 to travel North and South.  The last time we did that must have been around 1981.  For reasons with
which I need not bore you all, we may have to travel North on the A1 from the M25 up to possibly Grantham some time in the coming Spring.  As we will be towing we would like to know what the route is like these days for laybys and service stations.  We would
be most grateful for any comments from those of you who know the road.
