Gearbox judder.
Can anybody shed some light on the problem with gearbox judder when reversing please. I have a 2007 Bessacar E495 on a Fiat Ducato 130 body. When reversing uphill the gearbox feels like it could jump out of the vehicle. Do you know if Fiat has done anything
about it? I did hear somebody say that the vehicle is fitted with the wrong ratio on the reverse gear.

Yes there was a problem, cause by too high a ratio, which was fixed in 2009. I believe Fiat did do a remedial modification to those that requested it.

See if you can register your van on Fiat Ducato Camper. If you put in your VIN/chassis number it should tell you if there are any outstanding recalls on your van. The judder was fixed by Fiat after a major campaign led by Andy Stothert. Alternatively, a
Fiat Professional dealer should be able to look up your van's record.0 -
We had a 2007 3 litre. It was a pig In many ways but the judder in reverse was by far the worse problem. Fiat kept insisting there was nothing wrong. In the end we got rid of it so I'm not sure if they did offer an eventual fix.
The hab unit was a Bessacarr E795. It had build quality issues and Swift were fairly unhelpful athough they did take it back to the factory to retro fit the roof insulation they omitted in the first place. It's forever known by us as The White Elephant.

Hi montyd,
it was not a recall, fiat and peugeot only repaired on request. The gearbox was rebuilt with replacement shafts giving a lower ratio reverse gear. Mine was rebuilt in 2008, the result was so bad the mechanic declined to return mine and peugeot provided a
second set of new shafts. unfortunately the only way of changing the gear ratio in a small gearbox case was to fit (noisy) straight cut gears. My gearbox was no better afterwards. It still juddered badly in reverse. I found the only way to reduce it was to
try reversing with no accelerator and a very gentle foot on the clutch. I watched a guy with a heavy foot burn his clutch while reversing up his levellers. If you want it done talk to your local fiat dealer or phone fiat customer services.Regards Phil

Unfortunately a well known problem, can result in premature failure of clutch we had a Panel Van which suffered frpm it. I avoided reversing as much as possible and definitely not uphill. As per previous posts Fiat eventually owned up to a problem, you will
