Truma water heater cover

I have a cover on my Truma - externally that is - so IF or rather when I forget to take it off when using gas to heat the water - the water won't heat.  However this last trip I remembered to remove the cover except the holding thingies broke off.  Question
is - do I need the cover at all - or can I leave it open to the elements (I might need to cover it to stop rodents etc getting in).  It has survived the journey home but not sure how long it will survive travelling!
