Please be on your guard.
For some time now I have been receiving reports and alerts from our local constabulary, usually to warn of fraudsters or break-ins in the area but a couple of days ago I received this message;
“People, who use the canals for walking and fishing please, please put your rubbish in a bin or take it home. This is after 2 dogs have become seriously ill after eating what the vets believe to be an extremely mouldy sandwich which was wrapped in tinfoil in a plastic bag and had been thrown under a bush. The mould had turned toxic and poisoned the poor dogs. Both suffered fits, foaming at the mouth and a high temperature and are in the vets under sedation after having their stomachs flushed. Fingers crossed these dogs survive and no more become ill.”
As a regular canal dog-walker myself, I am now on my guard and I wanted to share this information for all you dog owners on the forum. Good luck and speedy recovery to those poor dogs.

It is worrying what dogs might pick up - recently at Skegness Sands we were warned that 4 dogs had died of rat poison picked up on the beach. These reports were unconfirmed but still worrying. My labrador would pick up and eat anything within reach so
she is always on a lead. It seems we have to be ever vigilant.1 -
This is also a big worry for me and I have also seen the reports about rat poison on Skegness beach. More common, however, are the inconsiderate beach fishermen who leave either rotting bait or discarded fish with swallowed hooks inside them, on the beach, which pose a threat to dogs. Sadly, a dog died the other day, during an operation to remove a fish hook after swallowing it on Hornsea beach. My Cockapoo has to be the greediest dog alive and will eat absolutely anything and although I am reluctant to do it, I am seriously considering getting her a muzzle to prevent this sort of thing happening.

I expect my Labrador might beat your cockapoo in the greed stakes - I always keep her on the lead on the beach for that reason - I think a muzzle is quite a good idea even if I don't like it.
There is also the Alabama Foot Rot (?) in Cumbria - my sister lives there and told of a dog dying there recently. WHERE has that sticky gone????

Pippah - have to admit that I'm not enthusiastic about a muzzle either - particularly as I suspect it might cause her some stress - but - I think I will see how we get on with one because I know it's only a matter of time before she eats something she shouldn't. Already had one 'near miss' with something disgusting in a plastic bag - which she ate, complete with plastic bag! Fortunately it all came back. I'm reluctant to keep her on a lead all the time because she has such fun playing with all her friends when we're there. It's so difficult knowing what to do for the best.
