My motorhome fridge heated the contents

When returning from France in mid October we stopped off at my son's home. We slept in the van but ate in his house. After a few days I noticed a very strong smell in the van fridge and discovered that the contents (mainly French cheeses) were very warm.
On checking I noticed that by mistake the gas was on BUT also the electric hookup was plugged in. I switched everything off and dumped the contents. 

I haven't tested the fridge since returning home but would like to hear from anyone who has had the same fault. Thank you.
