6 berth motor homes

We have just made the change from caravan to motor home and discovered our 6 berth has only 4 travel seats as per our V5C.  The  manufacturer Replies 2 more travel seats are additional cost, but we bought a 6 berth not a 4 berth???

    Berths = beds, not travelling seats. It's a well known anomaly and usually brochures say how many travelling seats are fitted. Unless you have been deliberately misled, I doubt there's any grounds for redress via the dealer or manufacturer. Sorry!

    Perhaps you didn't check how many belted seats there were.....just assuming because it said 6 berths you thought it meant 6 travalling seats.

    Our motorhome is a four berth van but only has two travel belted seats. That suits us fine and was part of the purchase decision. The crux of the matter is will you always be travelling with six people in the van. If that is the case perhaps you have the
    wrong van as there are quite a few with six belted seats.

    Ours is like David's. If we wanted to carry 2 more adults then given our normal carrying loads we would not have the payload I think to carry 2 more adults and our payload is quite good. Regards, Roy

    I'm not sure but I think it's OK for an adult to sit in a rear or side facing seat if there were no belts fitted at maunfacuter.

    My last m/h had 6 belts but ony 5 berths. My current one 3 belts and 4 berths. Next one will be two berth but four belts.

    As others have said it is quite common for there to be more berths than travel seats. Our current motorhome is a 6 berth but it only has 4 belted travel seats this isn't a problem for us as we never need to carry any more than 3 passangers anyway.

    That used to be the case but the law changed in 2006. Now all forward facing seats designated as travel seats must be fitted with seat belts. If produced before 2006 you might, although not advisable, get away with not using belts. There is more

    There are indeed MHs out there with more berths than travel/belted seats. 

    I don't know what your MH and payload are, but before you possibly decide on 2 additional seats, think very carefully, as that will increase the weight by quite a bit, eating into your payload.

    this is a very valid issue....

    if you are looking at a 6-berth (6-seater) van, this will be extremely difficult (virtually impossible) to acheive at 3500kg...

    if you are a (youngish) family man, its likely you dont have grandfather rights allowing a license for over 3.5t....

    you may find yourself caught between these two stools....

    6 berth means you have a choice of where you want to sleep. In reality there are few motorhomes in which 6 adults would want to travel together, eat, cook, wash and sleepLaughing

    However, many grandparents like to take their grandchildren off for adventures, giving parents a break, and the lack of seatbelts can be a problem. We know of one couple who changed their 'van for this very reason.

    Most continental motorhomes match berths to seatbelts.
