Tow hitch covers

Why do people fit these little covers to the front of their caravan?

Is there something about that little triangle, that it needs to be kept clean at all costs?

Some might say that it keeps the 12v cables dry.....but they seem to manage fine while towing in all weathers and close to the road spray. Also, doesn't a cover encourage damp to form on them?

Apart from providing some free advertising for a caravan dealer, I have never understood the purpose of them.
