We have had eight caravans in the last 40 + years from six different manufacturers and never needed wheels balanced so never had them balanced .

Same here. Waste of time. I also run 5, twin axle, Ifor Williams trailers and they have never been balanced.

...So how do you know that damage was not being caused to the bearings and suspension, or is it like a lot of companies, they were got rid of before defects materialised?

When I had new caravan tyres fitted recently, our local fitter (who I do trust) balanced the two caravan wheels / tyres without me asking. Not a great deal of weight was required.

However, he didn't balance the spare. I queried this and he said that balancing wasn't really necessary on caravans.

I have to say that if a wheel is 260 gms out then there must be something wrong with either the wheel or the tyre and I would want that sorting out before trying to get them balanced.

I should add, that my view is that you should have the ones on the caravan balanced......for the small amount of extra cost, why wouldn't you? It would also show up the faulty wheels / tyres described in earlier posts.

We had new tyres fitted to our twin axle a few weeks ago by a mobile fitter . He balanced the wheels without us even asking

Sorry to resurrect this subject, also applogise that my post is not in reference to a Caravan.

I have a tri-axle transport trailer, which it seems is not fitted with balanced wheels.

I can't seem to "feel" anything untoward regards towing stability etc, however, I would be very intrested if anyone has come up with further thoughts regarding getting them balanced.

A number of tyre fitters do not realise the colour coding of the spots on the outside of the tyre to show where the high/low weight is, so it might go against the valve or opposite the valve
