Recommended route from Yorkshire to Portsmouth?

Hi all, we will be travelling from Yorkshire to Portsmouth in a few weeks, we are setting off at around 2pm to catch the 11pm ferry to Le Havre. Any advice on the route? M1 then A43 then A34 or risk the M1 M25 then A3? I'm airing towards the A34 route to
avoid the dreaded M25. I'm not familiar with the route / area so any advice would be appreciated.
