Site names

You know the way that Ryanair have some rather fanciful ways of naming their destination airports after a major city, when actually they are nowhere near them?

Well, I wondered if you knew of any caravan sites that do the same? Not necessarily just CC sites.

A few that spring to mind -

Brighton - actually the best part of a mile from the sea front and maybe 3 miles from Brighton itself (although a very pleasant walk in).

Looe - not stayed here, but it also seems a good way out of Looe and at the top of a rather steep hill, with poor pedestrian facilities.

Weston-super-Mare (C&CC) - a car drive from the resort of the same name (and not a lot there when you get there!).

Perhaps if they renamed the Looe site 'St Martin' after the nearest village it would help, Ian. You'd all know where it was then.Laughing

C&CC's Windermere site is infact at Stavely, and is probably nearer Kendal than Windermere.

I can vouch that Brighton CC site is in Brighton. It might not be next to the Pavilion or on the end of the pier, but it is in Brighton.

Scarborough West Ayton.  It is a lovely site but must be at least 5 miles from Scarborough.

I think the point is that by CC naming their sites after nearby towns we all know roughly where they are. Go back to my post about the Looe site and you'll see what I mean. How many people have even heard of St Martin? Similarly, I'd not heard of Sedgwick
until we used the CC site but I knew where Kendal was. The use of town names simply provides easy identification of the area and doesn't mean anything other than that in my opinion.

My theory is that the Club was just too stingey to buy some large scale maps and took the names from a map in the back of someone's diary.

Almost as bad as Googles and Co who show names on their maps so thet they are spaced at regular intervals rather than based on size of conurbation. So some timy hamlets get prominence.

Marazion is another example.  Thankfully we found a lovely site just a few minutes walk from the St Michael's Mount causeway instead.

What annoys me is when a site is described as a 'short' distance from a town, only for the distance to measured by minutes in the car

Especially when the car must be a Bugatti Veyron.

Again, if the site was called St Hilary, no one would have a clue where it was.

We all check the location before booking, don't we? There shouldn't be any nasty surprises on arrival.

I would suggest that some wouldn't know where Marazion is either. Laughing

When Ryanair used to fly into St Javier on the Mar Menor, it used to call it "Alicante South". It's 45 miles away and Alicante airport is already five miles south of the city. Always read the small print!

The club's Hebden Bridge site is in fact at Mytholmroyd, and is about 1hrs walk from Hebden Bridge. However who's ever heard of, or can pronounce correctly, Mytholmroyd?Sealed

I agree with WanderingHans. The use of subjective phrases about how far somewhere is i.e. ideally placed, convenient for, nearby. Just say how far it is in miles, yards, kilometers or meters. As a motorhomer I like to walk or bike it so have to get maps
out to find out just what the CC thinks "ideal for" means. Got that off my chest! Yell

I can see why larger place names are used to give an indication of area BUT it is easy to be caught out!! The sites directory of things within a mile isn't overly useful, given many have been club sites for years it should be possible to have fuller information
within the site descriptions, even if you keep the same quick reference symbols -radically these symbols could have a number next to them to give distance  well.  As motorhomers we like to walk, cycle or use public transport and I find Google a good friend
with Birdseye views of location and bus stops, even roadside footpaths. The CC has been around far longer than Google maps so. How did folk manage before? Oh yes use the car!  I can only say that we read descriptions as estate agent speak, not to be skim read
    and facts checked .

Incidently years ago on one of our first trips a private site description said x minutes walk to bus stop, what it didn't say was it was over a public footpath across the fields useless if you had a pushchair or strappy sandals.  Luckily we didn't have either
on that ocassion. Just proves the point of checking!

One they could have used a name that clearly defines where it is located, is Maragowan. If you put it into Goggle maps, the only thing it comes up with is the caravan site. It lies on the edge of the village of Killin at the western end of Loch Tay. Why
not call it Killin. The Golf Course carries that name, and it is just beyond the site.

    Maragowan definitely needs a rethink!

Obviously we can check the exact location of sites before booking but I do find it disappointing when you think you've found a site in an area you want to visit - only for it to be miles away!

Coming soon - CC sites North Berwick and Fort William!

Chester Fairoaks is sited in Ellesmere Port but as Chester is a good olde Roman interesting type of place and Ellesmere Port is famed for its oil refineries I can see the Sites department's problem in selling it as a destination!Happy
