Spare Wheel Security

At the risk of seeming to be obsessed with security issues, although its more to do with me getting things right in my own mind, my thoughts turned to security of spare wheels. I had the Bailey out on the road yesterday to wash it. I thought I would have a look at the spare wheel and cradle. It would seem that you release two pins pull the cradle forward and it drops down. The wheel is not even fixed to the cradle! Having, in the past, had a spare stolen from under one of my cars you can understand my concern. What I have done is to run a steel cable through the wheel and around the cradle and locked into place with a padlock. At least this is better than nothing but would appreciate knowing how others deal with the same issue.
