What Causes Snaking

Had my first trip out recently , travelling down the A1 it was very windy . Just going under a flyover bridge ( about 50+MPH ) when the van stated to snake, the cars trailer stabilizer came on and righted the problem. I immediately Thought this had been
caused by the wind. But on my homeward journey a beautiful wind free  day a similar experience if moving more than 55MPH, I have'nt had a problem until now. Any Idea's ? ?
