Photos of old caravans
Hi all,
has anyone got/able to post any pictures they may have of their old caravans.
As I said in my introduction post we have had a long break from caravan ownership. over 25 years, and would love to see some pictures of your caravans from that era. I intend to dig all our old photo's out from our loft over the next 2 weeks and if I find any of our previous caravans I'll scan and try and post them.
Our first one was a very old and heavy Eccles ( Moonstone i think) with bay front window. We then had a 5 berth Lunar Clubman that had very deep front and rear windows so you could see through it in the mirror when towing.
Thanks and look forward seeing what you had back then.
Ian.

I've got some but posting them on here is a no-no so my avatar will have to suffice. It's a 1949 Bluebird Rambler which we owned in the early 1970s.

I know what you mean, not an easy forum to post pictures on.

Hi Milo,if you can retrace my 'avatar' back to earlier in the year, about Feb/March,you will see an old 'Pilot' circa 1947-50
.I still have it ,but it needs T.L.C ,,,,,,AND SOME !!.0 -
Tricky, I don't think that your old avatar will show. When you update you picture all your posts will show the new one.
Edit... I've gone back to Dec 2015 and my avatar for a post then is the same as the one showing here, and I've definitely changed it since Dec 2015.

Got in to our loft today and dug out some old photos of our previous caravans. Anyone remember these models The one hitched to our Hillman was an Eccles Moonstone If I remember correctly and the other was a 5 berth Lunar Clubman.
Ian.
p.s. still can't workout how to post bigger pictures. These were scanned and uploaded to PB but I can only seem to darg and post the thumbnails?

Great post/thred, this is what the forum should be about. Just seeing these old vans on here has bought back great memories of our old van, an Eccles 'Europa' late 1970s model, orange and black, no electric hook up, no water, toilet or shower, 5 birth with
a foldable double bed, spring matress. We had great holidays with our (then) young, three children. We managed France and Germany in it as well as the Uk. It was a heavy beast to tow, I would not want to tow it today. I have some old photos of it but havn't
got a clue how to do it on here, its a pity the club can't make it easier because I think there is a wealth of old caravanning memorabilia that can be posted on here for members to enjoy if only it was easier to upload photos.0 -
Thanks, I think I understand a bit better now. Still could be a lot easier though with better forum software

I struggle with it as well, yet other forums I use are fine. Maybe some kind person who has really cracked it could post them for you if you emailed them to them first?

Our first caravan (1987) was an old caravan and we gave it a try to see if we liked caravanning, and we did. The make was a 1976 Elite 13/4, built by Elite Coachcraft, Bridlington, at that time the price was £1,400.00 and was aimed at the mid-upper luxury market, we paid £500.00. It was towed by a 1.6 Ford Escort with a go faster wing on the back!!!!!!!!!
This caravan was not very good and needed lots of repair work, so we sold it to a scrap merchant for £500.00, so a cheap start to caravanning. We then bought an ACE Harmony, which was in a lot better condition.

Has anyone noticed how compact even the full awnings in these photos are? Positively miniscule compared to the 'big tops' we see now.

I have noticed just from these few photos how mucch things have changed. The pitches are random, pitch where you want, no hard standings, no aquarolls, not even EHU. I can not see any white lines and not even pitch 'marker pegs' (reminds me of one or two
non-CC sites we have been on this year) At the end of the day we all enjoyed those days and we all survived, we did not set fire to other pitches, we did not slip on the wet floors and our children did not get run over on site. Happy days0 -

Happy daysYes but... those were the days when people were properly edumacated and didn't require a stercificate to show they were superior to the unedumacated cos they have the bit of paper. Also the days of common sense whereas today it is rare sense.

The first van, didn't even have a fridge.
Who remembers having to get out the car and flipping the reversing clip over on the tow hitch

Yes I remember the reversing clip and the Scott stabiliser. The gaslights with the particular smell they gave off, glass and metal windows (not double glazed) which ran with condensation in the mornings, poor brakes on the van and incorrect car/van weight
ratio. We put our lives at risk every time we hitched up, but 'we were happy'. They were certainly carefree days, if not so safe and I would not want to go back to the caravan standards of those days.0 -
The old Eccles hitched to our Hillman Hunter was so heavy it cooked the auto box oil on our first encounter of a long slow incline. I overcame this by going to a breakers yard (remember those?) and found a transmission oil cooler on an old Yank that I fitted
to the Hillman. Never had the problem again0
