What defines a pup tent

On a site we have been on recently some of the pup tents were huge and adults were sleeping in them as well as children. Is there a size for them or do they just have to fit on the pitch within the metres from the next caravan?might be an option rather than putting an awning if we can put a bigger one up and also you can have them on non awning pitches. also we were told on one site you cant sleep in the awning but you can in a  pup tent sothat would be good.
