Tom Tom sat nav - good price
E Buyer have a TomTom Start 60 at a good price at the moment. It has a 6 inch screen. I expect it has been discontinued by TomTom but for anyone thinking of buying a new sat nav it might be worth a look.

AD, my 'very' elderly TomTom One V3 is my back up to my slightly less elderly Classic XXL.
The One last got a new map about 4yrs ago, and that needed to be chopped into chunks to get in on the unit.
the last update to the XXL was in the Autumn last year and, up to then i could get all onto the unit in one go....this is now not the case.
i checked out the lates update and they require seperate uploads.....
so, i decided that id gone as far as i could with the XXL and made a secure backup of the latest position, and decided i wpuld only put mapshare updates (and POI files) onto it....
if i ever need a new one i will buy one....
the thing with 'chunks' is that you might need to switch if all the countries in a tour are not in the same chunk...
i dont use a laptop and cant store the maps on this ipad...or can i?

We have a start sixty (4yrs) and the last map update this year made it very unreliable as to routes on several occasions, on one journey it took us through a housing estate with speed humps,then put us back on the road we had just come off 2miles further on
and it was not because we had "missed" the route instuctions!!We now have the Garmin C/van&camper ,got it from Aldi

check you have it set to 'fastest' route....speed humps through a housing estate sounds like 'shortest' route to me...
re: my earlier question to self about ipad compatibility....
there are apps to run Tomtom software as a navigator on ipad and iphone, however for its stand alone units, Tomtom requires an inteface program (either MyDrive or Tomtom Home) to provide the intelligence for the unit....
unfortunately, while there is a Mac version, there is no ipad/iphone version....so users must rely on a Windows or Mac computer.....bit last century.....(well, my steam driven XP box is

)...The Tom Tom 60 has not that option of fastest or shortest,it was fine at first with "free"map updates ,but the more it uploaded as requested the more unreliable it got,i think its a way of getting you to get a later model

The blurb on the web page listing the countries doesn't include Iberia so not a lot of good for snowbirds.

I had an email recently from TomTom warning me that my very elderly TT will shortly be no longer able to take even part map updates due to the ever increasing size of them. I have no idea how many models are involved but it would be prudent to check before

TomTom's have always been a bit mean on the internal memory. The Start 60 does have a micro SD card slot which I use for the Camper Maps I have down loaded on mine. I have had mine now for four years and I certainly haven't had the experience of some regarding
routes. It has almost faultlessly navigated us all over Europe with no issues.David

For Information.....
just spent some time last night getting together all the 2016 (latest) POIs for CC/CLs/CCC/CS/Forest/Listed sites, aires, bordatlas, mylpg, ACSI etc....(with Archie's Camping as back up.) and loading them onto my two Tomtoms...
the problem these days is that many of these Euro files are now split by country which makes this a much longer, pedantic process..
still, all seems to be working, so sorted for our Channel Hop in January, where aires, ACSI and LPG will be the order of the day (10 weeks.....
)if anyone would like a copy of the latest aires data, its available from campingcar-infos.com but there are 9 types for around 25 countries and sorting it out can be hard work..
...i have the following 5 types (which we use the most) set up for Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia..
1. service area only, no overnight parking
2. service area with overnight parking
3. dedicated daytime MH parking, no services
4. general daytime parking (incl MH), no services
5. general day/night parking (incl MH), no services
...i can email these files to any CTer who is interested....

I've always used Garmin.
To me the major differentiator was a pc based route planning app, used to be called City Navigator, now known as basecamp.
Its free. Also if you purchase a satnav with lifetime maps, every three months you get a free map update both for the satnav & basecamp.
I never ever enter a destination into the satnav and follow it, they all make stupid mistakes, like going through housing estate with speed bumps to bring you out a few hundred yards up the road.
Plan your journey with basecamp, let it plot a route, then go over it closely looking for the stupid mistakes, correct them then download it onto your satnav.
Then you know where you're going with no surprises.

We have the Start 60 and we're not too impressed.
Map updates have always been a difficult affair, being painfully slow and often ending with an error message, meaning either start again or give up in frustration.
The fact that the inbuilt memory is so small that the first update will not fit and you have to chose which bits you want is just a joke.
Ours has not functioned correctly for a good while now - the screen suddenly flits through the various memories, as though the buttons are being presed and we have to work back through them to the map display. This can happen several times in succession at times.
When it decides on a particular route, but we decide to go a different way, the TomTom constantly tries to make us go to its chosen route and will spend the next 20 to 30 minutes telling us to turn off the road or to "turn around where possible". Our previous sat nav (a very cheap and basic TT) would just accept that we were going a different way and re-plan the route.
Only plus point is the ability to input lat-long positions for sites in France (as they don't have post codes). This is a long-winded process but is usually spot on and takes you right to the site entrance.
I'm going to try a different product next time. Probably Garmin.

I've got the Start 60 and been really pleased with it. I update on a quarterly basis which takes a bit of time but then operates fine. Had it for 2 years now and used in Spain and France as well as UK. As you say lat-long input really useful when abroad. At end of month off to Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland,France,Luxembourg and Belgium so fingers crossed still works fine.

We have also had this problem although for some reason it eventually calms down the longer you go through the journey. I had the habit of setting the route the night before and the following morning using the previous destination option for the route. When I set the route immediately before setting off it tends not to happen so much. I have not really investigated why this happens, probably needs a reset.
I should really think about a new sat nav but am reluctant to buy another Garmin as the one I had previously was terrible. I will have to have a look at the TomTom range and see what ones now accept the camper maps that I already have loaded on to my micro SD card.

I suspect that model was on special offer and now sold out. If I were buying now my basic requirements would be:-
6 inch screen
European maps (not worried about speed cameras or traffic)
Ability to accept Camper Maps
Micro SD slot unless memory is large enough (unusual on a TomTom)
Accepting the Camper Maps could be the fly in the ointment as new models don't all accept them, so check before you buy.

In my opinon a cheap sat nav is no good for towing/motorhome, it will take you on unsuitable roads.
As for storage, my old tom tom only has a hard drive, but my garmin has a mini s.d. card slot, so no problem updating maps, and I can setb it for car/caravan/lorry or walking

I believe it's a problem with the touch screen, which thinks that it is being pressed and hence brings up a menu and then it thinks a menu button has been pressed and so on.
Apparently it's a common problem (we also had it on our previous cheapo TT and they repaired it under warranty). There are a lot of complaints on TT forums.
One solution was to run a piece of card (or similar) around the edge of the screen, under the black surround - to try to dislodge any tiny pieces of grit that might be causing the screen to deflect. This didn't work on ours for any appreciable time.
I did wonder whether it was hot weather that caused the screen to deflect, but we've had the problem on very cold days too.
As you say, sometimes it works fine for hours. But other times it constantly flits through the menus and you have to click back trough them again. Very annoying and now out of warranty, so would cost the price of a new, cheap unit to have it repaired.
