Hi I am looking for advice please. After having to have my leg amputated I just cannot get into my caravan. I tried but have badly cut my good leg! I also have ms just to complicate things. We are beginning to think that maybe we would be better off with
a folding camper or trailer tent?  Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also are there any steps with handrails so we could continue to use the caravan.

    Hi Contrarycat, so sorry to hear of your difficulties. If you google Motorstep you will find a device like a small step lift that would enable you to access your caravan. I have no personal knowledge if it and I am sure there must be other makes or models available but hopefully this is something that you might be able to consider. I do hope you can continue caravanning or camping in whatever way is best for you.

    Accessing a folding camper doesn't seem any different to a caravan in my limited experience.  A trailer tent doesn't have a hard door/frame to access the bed area, but the setting up is quite physical, so you might struggle with that aspect if your mobility
    is limited.  Without knowing what aspect of access you're finding difficult, it's difficult to suggest a solution, but there are lightweight ramps etc that you might be able to use instead of a step and lifting steps as mentioned above.  Above all, i hope
    you find a solution that suits and allows you to continue to enjoy your leisure time.

    I'm sorry to hear of your problem but, as has been suggested, I don't feel that a change of unit would necessarily solve the issue. I think you'd be better off adapting the caravan entrance to suit your needs with one of the available aids.

    Just a thought. Are you able to access the cab of a commercial vehicle? If so, could a motorhome be the answer where you could move from the cab directly into the habitation area?

    I've  seen  adverts  for  a  "Step Stool"  type  item  with  a  support  on  one  side  in  the  "Easy  Life"  {or  something  like  it}  that  comes  with  weekend  newspapers  &  some  magazines.  That  added  to  a  Security  Style  Door  Lock  for  Caravans / Motorhomes   which  looks very  much  like  the  fixed  assistance   rail  fitted  to  many  house door  frames  might,  together,  help  you  ContraryCat.

    Another  route  might  be  to  look  up  your  local  Disabled  Living  Accessory  traders  --  some  of  the  various  gizmos  that  they  sell  are  handy  for  everybody  and  not  just  for  the  folks  they  are  aimed at  !

    P.S.  { timed  out Yell  }

    I'm  not  sure  that  Packing  away  or  setting  up  a  trailer  tent  would  be  very  easy  for  you  -->  thinking  of  two  acres  of  soggy  canvas  in  a  fresh  coastal  breeze  is  not  what  I'd  call  a  Good  Holiday  Experience,  CC !!
