Beware of the step (it bites)
A word of warning to all new motorhome converts ,about the hab door step ,on my M/H (and probably most) the hab door step retracts when you turn the ign on.
I found this out on our last weekend trip , i had been in and out of the door all weekend ,right its time to go ,so i went to start the M/H up ,and then thought must check the side locker,so i went out the hab doorwhat no step ,as i fall on my face , my wife thought i had hurt myself as i was rolling about , but i was in fits of laughter
That day i learnt about the step , and i'm learning all the time

You found that out the hard way, Husky.
The step operates by a micro switch underneath which is prone to getting clogged with road dirt and every so often refuses to operate. Get underneath and clean it if that happens. If the step refuses to retract you can force it in manually.

I have free standing steps and having left one set behind in a car park, "step in" is on my check list of to do before moving off. Almost impossible to step out without them there as they are stored infront of the doorway so I a can deploy them from both inside and out. You were lucky HD, there have been serious injuries doing what you did.

mirror for it before setting off !!.0 -
Our German just shouts very loudly if you start the engine with the step out so that you retract it with a button on the dash; otherwise it is controlled by a switch beside the hab door.
+1 except we don't have a button on the dash, the passenger has to leg it to the habitation door and retract before all are deafened

Does that mean I have to persuade a German person to come with us every time to check the step

Try a German Shepherd .
Presumably because the omission will leave you feeling sheepish.
