Staying on a CL...peace & quiet or too risky!

Having stayed on CLs in the past, I cannot recall ever having an issue other than poorly maintained or installed waste and water points.  That is until yesterday!!

Having waited until the Easter crowds had gone back home, we booked into the Stonely Priory CL near Stonely/Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire.  On arrival at mid day on Monday, three of the four vans on site were packing up to leave. That left us and one remaining
van for the afternoon, but we only saw the occupants when they arrived back early evening and started to break down the awning etc ready for a morning departure.

So day two saw us with a field to our selves (and our mini shnauzer). Relaxing brunch, walk with the dog and back for coffee.  We then decided to go out for the afternoon, leaving the van all locked up with the blinds closed, we left at around 13:00.

The CL had fairly thick bushes around three sides, along with fairly high, although flimsy fencing and it had a combination lock on the gate.

On returning only a few hours later at 16:15, I said to my wife, "Did you put the steps inside before we left"? Before she replied, I looked at the door and could see that the worst had happened.  The door had been forced and the van had been ransacked!
£3000 worth of Electrical goods, clothes etc gone, plus a quote for around £800 to have the door and frame replaced.

The pillow cases had been taken off the pillows and used to carry stuff away in, including my wifes underwear sets!!

Police attended and took prints from the door etc and a statement, but do not hold much hope of recovering anything.

(My wife seems to think that the gate padlock combination was not on the same numbers that she had left it on when we left)!

The CL owner refunded or money and was most appologetic  To our surprise the farmer informed us that another van had been broken into a few weeks previously, but it had not been reported to the police.

Needless to say, we came home late last night as we didnt feel comfortable there and we were lacking in clothes.

We await a response from the insurance company (Caravan Guard) re our claim

So this begs the question, is it worth risking peace and tranquility by being the only van on a site, or should you stick to busier sites or at least make sure there will be other vans on the CL?
