Rotary clothes driers – Love em or hate em!

We have just returned from a long weekend at Moreton in Marsh and after a evening walk around the site it looked like one in five caravans/motorhomes had a rotary line set up in full display of everyone like a newly planted trees in full view to all. This is not the only site, rotary driers are sprouting up all over.

Okay, it’s maybe a family with kids, lots of towels to dry after shower time, but why oh why should it be in full view of everyone, can’t it be hidden behind the awning or at the back of the caravan! My personal view is that they make any site, CC or not look an untidy mess. We have seen them at many sites; the caravan arrives, up goes the awning and out comes the rotary drier, with or without clothes to dry…. Aaaaargh

Last year, again at Moreton in Marsh a rotary drier was in our direct view, it had the same T shirt and jeans hanging from it for a week!!

In the summer we tour for three to four weeks at a time. We wash clothing and dry it, but never hang it out to dry in public, we use the on-site facilities. Why because it would make the place we are staying at and enjoying look a mess.

What really surprises me is that CC sites sell them at site offices. Can you imagine what the every site would look like if everyone had one…

Goodness, Glider, you have got the bit between your teeth.

There are a few points to consider here. Clothes hung out to dry need to be set in a position to catch the sun and breeze so hiding the airer at the rear of the unit might be self defeating and plain daft. The price of site laundry facilities is likely encouraging
people to dry clothes outdoors so perhaps CC should be lobbied to reduce prices. Those who use airers to dry clothes in the open air are seen by some as being environmentally friendly.

Lastly, I think you perhaps need to consider if you're being a tad over fussy. Most people aren't bothered by seeing washing hung out and the majority of people spend several hours off site rather than sitting and staring around them at the behaviour of
others. You noticed the same shirt and jeans on someone's airer for a whole week! I go on holiday to enjoy myself and not to worry about petty things like washing drying. Sorry, but I can't agree with your feelings.

I dry my clothes on a rotary washing line at home or when we are away when it's not raining, if it offends you then tuff.

rotary driers are the best thing in green energy. Better than the wind farms that power electric driers. Of course there is a way to do away with both. Stink. :-)

Every year I go away for weeks at a time. I prefer to dry my clothes in the fresh air rather than using the electric dryers. It is not just better for my clothes it is better for the planet.  If my washing offends you look away.

The term "give and take", or "everyone to their own" comes to mind.

A freestanding rotary drier seems to me to be just another quite bulky and unnecessary piece of kit to haul around.  A piece of rope strung between suitable supports works just as well...... but is no doubt 'against the rules' Sad.

(Take care if you are ever on a yacht in an MDL marina though.......hanging ANY washing out is STRICTLY against the rules!).

In response to the OP campsites are supposed to look hap-hazard they obviously would not have liked camping when i started back in the late 60's if you did not hang your smalls(or in my case Larges) outside where would you have got your clean ones from? to much regimentation not enough fun or underwear jokes for that matter.

At the end of the day what is so offensive about some one drying their washing at the back of the van surely preferable to using valuable electic in the dryers??

We have a rotary drier. I cannot say I love it but it is a useful piece of kit and we can see no other sensible alternative. You are not allowed to run lines to trees which are usually the only alternative. We do try to keep it at the back of the pitch but
sometimes the layout makes this impossible.

Is this post a wind-up? I'll assume it's not, and answer your question.

Love ours - and it's an essential piece of kit for us for longer holidays away.  Much greener than using the tumble dryer - so sorry you don't like them.  Perhaps you should think about getting a taller windbreak so they can no longer offend you?

We have one too, and use it on a regular basis as we're away for extened periods and need to wash clothes & bedding each week. I place it in the best postions to catch the wind and sun when it's out. Needs must.

Don't like sleeping bags!  At Hythe I was turfed out for sleeping on board for more than 3 nights .... and that was on my brothers privately owned berth alongside his house!

Well I find it provides some light refreshment for me, I'm a people watcher and it gives me the opportunity to compare other peoples washing hanging out to see how it compares to ours Wink makes
a change from comparing tow cars and caravans!

I bet that the original poster has cheap holidays. No money spent on fuel, food, drink etc. Just gazing at wahing all day. No need to buy books to read. I must try it. It could make caravaning more fun!

I am afraid I find it difficult to believe the original post is anything but a wind up. How can anyone be offended by a simple bit of kit like a rotary drier. You could equally be offended by a BBQ or sat dish.

I think he/she is a new and inexperienced poster, Steve, rather than a troll and has not yet acquired tolerance in accepting the ways of others. He'll get there.

Children, dogs, flags, loud TV's, awning heaters, AC's, speeders, BBQ's, satellite dishes, pitching nose in and now rotary clothes driers. Have I got the list complete? Is there anything new to complain about? Sad
