Fresh water tank - should I sterilise it?

A question I've been wondering about is should you periodically sterilise your onboard fresh water tank (FWT) (and waste water maybe).

What would you do this with and how often.

(I empty my FWT after every trip.)

Advice or suggestions welcome.
