Fighting For Food.....

Serious post - my daughter phoned to tell us about the mini riot that was taking place in her local Tesco hypermarket.

It involved reduced food - sandwiches, trifles, etc, all reduced to 1p.  Things got ugly very quickly, apparently, with people literally fighting each other to grab the booty.  There was a great deal of swearing, and a level of hosility that frighened her 6 year old daughter to tears.

I know it's fashionable tp purse one's lips and be disapproving about these sort of antics - but there really *does* seem to have been a fundemental change in shopping behaviour (and a fairly recent one at that)

Everyone loves a bargain, and slight scrabbles for the best ones are nothing new - but this was altogether different, much nastier, and quite violent.

I don't thnk it was just down to a lack of money as most of the combatants already had overflowing trolleys, and we're being told that retailers have had a boom Christmas season.

I shudder to think what would happen if the food distribution system ever collapsed - it's long been an MI5 maxim that Britain 'is only two meals away from a revolution', but with the increasingly frenzied behaviour of well fed shoppers, one doubts whether total anarchy would now wait even that long!
