Hand winch to get your motorhome out of trouble

Has anyone bought/used a hand winch to get a motorhome out of trouble when stuck. I am planning a 6 month trip touring through Europe and researching equipment that may come in handy. Having recently got stuck on a flat grassed CL site this bit of kit
may come in handy in remote places. I know you can buy "grip mats" which go under the front wheels, (front wheel drive) but you have to be parked on them to work. Any experiences or ideas would be very gratefully received.
