2nd hand towing car

Always towed with a 110 Landrover up to now so weight and power never been an issue.  However now looking at getting an estate car to tow our van which is currently an old xl 2 berth ABI but we are looking to upgrade to a double axle Swift Conquerer as we
intend to go touring a lot and would like a bit more space and comfort. Choice of cars so far is a Volvo V70 2.4 D5 SE automatic or same car in a manual or a VW Passat estate 1.9 TDI (130bhp) or a Mercedes 2.7 TD E270 CDI Elegance. We feel the VW may not be
powerful enough and are currently leaning towards the Volvos.  Any advice please? All cars are 03 or 05 plates. Only the Volvos currently have tow hitches.
