Engine-off caravan lights

I had my car's 13 pin electrics fitted by a reputable local auto electrician but after a while realised that the pin for the fridge was live whenever the car was connected.
The car was returned for him to fit a ignition-controlled relay so that the fridge pin was only live when the engine was running.

As I’ve never needed to tow at night before, it was only on a recent night arrival at a site from a ferry that I discovered that when I turned off the engine (but left my car sidelights on), the caravan’s external lights all went
off!

Before I take this issue up, can I just confirm with others that my logical understanding is correct and surely all the night-time lighting that would be lit on the car when engine-off should also be lit on the connected caravan
– sidelights and number plate, hazard/indicator lights.
And similarly, with engine-off but ignition-on, this should also add brake lights.

(Our standard site-departure lighting check has until now always been done with the engine running so that we could check the fridge was powered)
