Closing threads at request of OP
A thread has been closed...no problem...'at the request of the OP'....problem!
There are many reasons a thread can and should be closed, but I have never seen this before.
Are thread starters now allowed to close threads on a whim?

I doubt that it would be automatically accepted by mods/admin and there would have to be a good reason for the request to be accepted. If the original thread contained incorrect information unbeknown to the OP at the time of posting that could be a reason. If a thread had gone so far off topic that the OP felt that his original reason for posting had been completely lost might be another reason. There will be other reasons as well but the OP would still have to make the case.

I've argued this point before when I've seen an OP ask for closure because he/she believes the thread has 'run its course'. To my mind it's unfair on others to deny them the opportunpity of posting and MichaelT's example would prevent others having the chance to explore the subject further. When the thread has truly run its course it will sink down the page into oblivion.
David had outlined scenarios that can warrant closure but, generally, I feel threads should not be closed on the say so of the OP.

If the OP has a specific question and it's answered to his/her satisfaction why not let them be in control. So many threads go wildly off subject and at times just appear to have become social media which would probably be better served elsewhere.

As I said earlier, MF, in my view closure deprives others of contributing and prevents further exploration of the topic.
Anyone who wants to discuss the topic of a thread closed at the behest of the OP for non-contentious reasons is likely to start a second thread on the same subject. Thus the closure becomes pointless.

If a member asks a question and that information would be useful to other members coupled with the thread staying on topic, in my view it would be unreasonable for the OP to ask for it to be closed and I doubt somehow that any OP would ask for a discussion
to be closed in such circumstances. I would be very reluctant to close in such circumstances. At the end of the day the OP has to make a case for closure, its not a given.David

Think I saw this thread .
A new poster enquired ad to whether anyone else had seen or liked a specific motorhome and a couple of pages of advice about payloads basically decrying his choice of vsn together with the mandatory off topic comments followed so I guess the OP perhaps felt
his question was not going to be answered.....0 -
The thread I've seen has only a few off topic posts and contains a lot of factual information which people could find useful.
I can only assume there was something not obvious to us readers which prompted it's closure.
